I am delighted to have launched my MAERL Seabed Superhome exhibition at the Sawyer Gallery, Inveverewe Gardens, in time to share the story of the extraordinary tiny hard branching purple/pink seaweed ‘maerl’ – to celebrate World Ocean Day.
Looking forward to welcoming local School children from Poolewe and Scoraig Primary Schools this week into the exhibition. Working with marine enthusiast Fiona Mackenzie we will be leading a day of creative fun learning about maerl beds and the life it supports in the Wester Ross Marine protected Area.

We will be: using our imaginations listening, to marine life recordings, watching videos of marine animals living on our nearby seabeds. Observing and drawing washed up maerl, creating camouflages to disappear in the maerl sculptures, drawing seabeds, and playing a maerl habitat board game , the aim of which is to get ‘Herring eggs’ through the seabed obstacle course and into the safety of the maerl bed.
“I’d like the exhibition to give people the chance to experience maerl on land, without donning diving kit – to just be among it, imagine life within it.”
The exhibition is open to all visitors to Inverewe Gardens daily 10am-4pm, the garden is open until 6pm
